چکیده

This is a description of research in developing a natural language processing system with modular knowledge sources but strongly interactive processing. The system offers insights into a variety of linguistic phenomena and allows easy testing of a variety of hypotheses. Language interpretation takes place on a activation network which is dynamically created from input, recent context, and long-term knowledge. Initially ambiguous and unstable, the network settles on a single interpretation, using a parallel, analog relaxation process. We also describe a parallel model for the representation of context and priming of concepts. Examples illustrating contextual influence on meaning interpretation and "semantic garden path" sentence processing are included.

Experiencing God

Some philosophers claim that it is not possible for God, if God exists, to figure in the phenomenological content of experience. W.T. Stace was one such philosopher committed to this claim, but he offered nothing in the way of an argument for it. William Forgie, however, has argued that on the assumption of two putatively plausible theses about the phenomenology of experience, phenomenologicall...

Research-Based Teaching and Learning within a Constructivist Framework: Designing a Phenomenologically-Based Model

To explain the process of research-based methods of teaching and learning based on the professional knowledge of educational experts, and identify the benchmarks in using such a method, 25 academics at Farhangiyaan University and Ministry of Education were interviewed. The data were used to answer two basic questions: What characterizes research-based teaching and learning, and based on...

Phase and Exact Models for Multifunctional Central Pattern Generators

We compare multistability in central pattern generator (CPG) motifs comprised either of biologically plausible Hodgkin-Huxley models of bursting leech heart interneurons or of phenomenologically reduced phase models. We propose a novel computational tool for detailed examination of polyrhythmic bursting in biophysical CPG models with coupling asymmetries and arbitrary coupling strength. We carr...

Continuous Global Symmetries and Hyperweak Interactions in String Compactifications

We revisit general arguments for the absence of exact continuous global symmetries in string compactifications and extend them to D-brane models. We elucidate the various ways approximate continuous global symmetries arise in the 4-dimensional effective action. In addition to two familiar methods axionic Peccei-Quinn symmetries and remnant global abelian symmetries from Green-Schwarz gauge symm...

Helmholtz HSH-Based Basis: A Compact Phenomenological Representation of Arbitrary Reflectance

Visual appearance can be phenomenologically modeled through an integral equation, known as reflectance equation. It describes the surface radiance which depends on the interaction between incident light field and surface Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF). Being defined on the Cartesian product of the incident and outgoing hemispheres, hemispherical basis is the natural way ...
